The Rapper
During a particularly edgy time on Saturday afternoon, this guy got up in front of the police lines and gave a thoughtful, unrehearsed, and funny rap about
racism. It was not well-received by the masses behind me. "Now see my Brother here" [spins around and points to a visored black cop behind him], "Do you think the other cops treat him like a real brother?" [Interjections from the almost totally white crowd: "But he's a cop", "Kill the fucker", etc.]... "But it's his job; we all end up with shit jobs unless we're lucky or the good Lord pulls strings...". etc. All except the good Burghers of Berkeley, I guess.... People actually booed him for his plea for a bit of thought about the complexities of black cops protecting privileged white students, and about the choices available to them all. He gave up after a few minutes and wandered off into the crowd.
