Pandemonia: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Over the years I’ve had a bunch of questions sent to me about Pandemonia and / or myself. Here are some of the most asked (and sometimes answered):
The site looks ... different. What happened?!
Over the years I got tired of Pandemonia just sitting there languishing, and finally decided to reinvent it starting early September 2014 using WordPress. It's still very much a work in progress... and a lot of the old stuff is still there, if you know where to look.
What WordPress theme are you using here?
Currently I'm using GT3's "Oyster" theme, which seems to work well with photography, but it may change with experience.
Do you have a Facebook Page?
Funny you should ask... yes, it's Hamish Reid Photography. "Like" it if you like it, if you know what I mean.
What's the relationship between HamishReid.com and Pandemonia?
I use HamishReid.com as a formal portfolio site, with minimal commentary and other stuff. I leave that other stuff to Pandemonia, here. Yes, I should unify them all one day but I'm lazy.
Your site looks terrible with IE 7 or IE 8...
The site looks terrible no matter what browser you're using (remember, I'm an engineer with no aesthetic sense).
More seriously, Internet Explorer users have my sympathy (even if that wasn't a question). As a professional web developer, I'm always surprised anyone can see anything much with Internet Explorer before about version 10.
Where's all the old stuff?
Check out Old Pandemonia for most of the old content. But warning: it's not all there any more, and it looks just like you'd expect stuff from the mid-1990's to look (i.e. pretty terrible). But some people like it that way, I guess.
Is Pandemonia really that old?
I think Pandemonia's about twenty years old, but I can't be sure (I don't have any billing records or reliable documentation from that era, and it predates the various wayback machines and archives). Certainly, if you look at the Old Pandemonia stuff, you can get a feel for its probable age...
Can I use your images on my site?
In general, if it's for limited non-commercial use, yes. I'd prefer that you credit me somewhere near the image and / or put a link back to Pandemonia, but that's up to you.
For commercial use, please get in touch.
Where did the name "Pandemonia" come from?
A long time ago I lived in London. One day someone had scrawled "Pandemonia" on little pieces of paper they'd attached to various bits of the Underground, usually with a short, incomprehensible paranoid rant about... well, something. The name sort of stuck with me for a few years, and since the domain name was easy to get (they all were back then), that's what I ended up with for this site.
So, sadly, there's no deep meaning behind it being called "Pandemonia" at all.
What sort of cameras do you use?
I’m really not any sort of gearhead, but for those who care about these things, my current camera of choice is an iPhone 5s (the best camera is always the one you have with you when you need it…); I also use a little Canon Powershot G12 a lot for street and candid photography. I have a Nikon D800 and a Nikon D300 for “serious” work; I have three or four lenses for the Nikons, but I couldn’t tell you what they are without looking.
Back in the film era I used to have a Nikon FM2n 35mm camera, a Pentax 67 medium format camera, and a Sinar 4x5 view camera, amongst other stuff. Those cameras are long gone now, but most of the earlier pix on this site were taken with them.
Can I get prints of some of the images here?
I do occasionally sell some of the images here either as custom fine art prints or in other media, so if you want a print, please ask. Pease note, though, that I print in batches, and it can take me months to get a batch started.
How do you pronounce the name "Hamish"?
It's pronounced "hey-mish", with a light emphasis on the first syllable, more or less. It's a Scottish name, sort of the equivalent of James (English) or Seamus (Irish). I've lost count of the number of Americans who pronounce it "Hah-meesh" or similar (even after they've heard it pronounced properly multiple times).
Are you the Hamish Reid who used to captain the P&O Oriana?
No. Well, not so's you'd notice, anyway (the name "Hamish Reid" is common as muck in UnAmerica, ya know).
Are you related to that other Pandemonia?
You know, the one at Pandemonia99?
Oh sure. I'm her little brother. After all, I did once live in London. And she is taller than me.
